E-commerce sites for more than a 100 brands all over the world

Solteq helps ASSA ABLOY build e-commerce globally

ASSA ABLOY, the global leader in door opening solutions, is undertaking a truly global effort – to build e-commerce sites for its more than 100 brands in markets all over the world. In 2014 ASSA ABLOY chose to let Solteq lead the entire rollout project, including implementation, technical development and systems integration, licenses, systems administration, support and training.

“Since we have local presence in more than 70 countries and so many different brands, we needed to create a great number of individual web sites, each with its own functionality and look and feel”, says Marcus Hvied, IT Director Global IT Shared Service at ASSA ABLOY. And we are building them all on one common and centrally hosted platform, based on IBM WebSphere Commerce software.

Adding new markets and innovative products

ASSA ABLOY was founded in 1994 and has since evolved from a regional Nordic lock company into a leading international supplier of security solutions, including access control and identification technology, mechanic and electromechanical locking solutions, security doors and hotel security. The group is continually expanding both organically and through acquisitions, adding new markets, new innovative products and extended e-commerce capability – globally and locally.

“Today our main e-commerce focus is on business-to-business, with customers such as locksmiths, building contractors, hotel chains and distributors. But we are also planning to introduce business-to-consumer web sites on a limited number of markets.”

The overall approach for ASSA ABLOY’s e-commerce rollout is to provide a basic set of features and functions, which are reused for each individual web site, along with added specific functions and an individual look-and-feel to suit a particular geography or brand. At the center is the IBM Commerce platform, hosted at one single location.

Multi-site functionality on a great scale

“We have based our rollout on the IBM Commerce platform because it is regarded as the best solution in the market, by Gartner and many other qualified analysts”, says Marcus Hvied. This is especially true if you need multi-site functionality on a great scale, as we do. The solution offers many useful features, practical functions and great flexibility for tailoring it to different needs.

The IBM Commerce software is also built for ease of integration with other systems, such as ERP and CRM.

“Each of the web sites demands integration with a different set of systems. This is obviously a challenge”, says Timo Kupsa, Solteq’s Program Manager for the rollout.

Since the project started in 2014, branded stores have been launched both for the global market and for the US, Australian, Norwegian and Danish markets. Upcoming launches include e-commerce sites for brands in Europe, North America and South-East Asia.

Proven track record

“We chose to work with Solteq for a number of reasons”, says Marcus Hvied. “First, they have the right competence and a proven track record. Like IBM, they invest a lot in building strong e-commerce capability. We also appreciate Solteq’s executive commitment to support us in this truly global project. Their team is transparent, responsive and quick to adapt to our often-changing demands.”

Solteq today employs more IBM Commerce developers than any other company in the Nordics. The team for ASSA ABLOY’s rollout consists of Solution Architects, Commerce Developers including UI/UX experts, Integration Specialists, Project Managers and Service Managers among others, working in Finland and Poland.

“The variety of time zones and different regional cultures create their own challenges, but it’s also the richness of the whole thing”, concludes Program Manager Timo Kupsa.
